We are back in Switzerland since this morning, so besides being tired, we are obviously full with many gorgeous pictures and experiences. Also a bit sad that our vacation is already over. I stumbled over the Great Ocean Walk as possibility somewhere, and then there were 2-3 potential parties that could organize. However, you were the only ones that agreed on a deviation to the schedule and be a fast replier.
Your planning was very well and it did quite well match our ideas and expectations. Though I have to agree that we were surprised that with the many photo-stops and more up & downs than expected, the average indeed comes down to 4km per hour (usually we are easily faster.)
What was important (besides the only 3 days itinerary) was that we can do the walk self-guided at our own pace. Improvements – none really; the supply of Telstra-Mobile and the emergency kit helped to not worry. The map however was the essential part to help track where we are and if we will be at the pickup in time. Sometimes we wondered why we were really fast in some parts and quite slow in others. Either the map is not fully correct or it might also be that this was just a not so interesting part so we just kept walking.
Accommodation: Ecolodge and B&B are very distinct; still we enjoyed both of them. The Dusk walk and common dinner in Ecolodge was a great experience and the hospitality of the B&B together with their great breakfast and sandwiches made both locations a very pleasant stay……
Improvements on walk: As far as I understood, this is already planned: alignments to keep the track even closer to the coastline. The stretch on the first day on the 4WD-road is obviously not as breathtaking as most of the other parts. Also (and probably easy to do) would be to complete the last 2 km from the Car park to 12 Apostle. That would be a really nice “Finish-Experience”.
Our rating to the walk: This was among the best experiences in our vacation with a very good combination of physical exercise, breathtaking views, nice accommodation and nature experience/tranquity during the day. I had high expectations, so meeting them surely was not easy- still it worked! Recommendations to others: Walk91 is certainly a good choice :-). Generally we spoke to many other travellers and B&B hosts about the walk an only a few had heard of it…..So thanks in any case, we really enjoyed Australia and the GOW in particular!
